It all began in Gainesville, Florida, in the mid-nineties, with a camera and an attempt at food photography. After multiple genuine efforts to jump-start my career as a photographer, I decided while in college to try my hand at food styling and baking. Through baking I discovered an immense pleasure in combining ingredients and adding heat, in order to create confections that my family and friends loved. I ended up baking for the next 15 years. 

During that time I enjoyed experimenting with increasingly non-traditional flavor combinations to varying degrees of success. It was during one of these experiments that I came up with what would eventually become the Sumner & Company salted caramel filling. The response was astounding and I began to just make caramels. After several years of recipe tweaking, numerous burns, a dozen or so thermometers, hundreds of pounds of sugar, thousands of candy wrappers and plenty of taste testing, I’ve perfected the Sumner & Company Caramel. 

This website is a place where you can keep up with our ever-growing company, and score some of these delicious sweets for yourself. It’s also the culmination of the past 30-odd years of my culinary journey. I really hope you enjoy your visit, and our product, even if it’s just for 30 seconds while you chew.
